Enough to get you started, but not as "Advanced" as I had hoped. Yes, it shows you how to use what Captivate refers to as "advanced actions" but it's not quite what I had hoped for when I purchased it. On the kindle, the print is tiny, fuzzy and unreadable, even on my DX. I attempted to send it to my Kindle for PC application, but the print was tiny and the formatting was such that many pages were simply blank.

This is a bad, bad deal on a Kindle. This is a short book with 5 basic examples. I agree that this book was carelessly put together. The author seems knowledgeable, so I recommend that he try polishing up the publishing process.

Consider the size of a typical mobile phone compared to the various shapes and sizes of tablets, such as the Apple iPad, Microsoft Surface, and Amazon Kindle Fire. Who wants to do that? Additionally, who could possibly consider every screen size for every device?

Even if you could build lessons for every screen size known today… what about the screen sizes for devices that have yet to be invented? If you've included a quiz in your eLearning lesson, it's likely you'll need to track the quiz results. And if working with an LMS is a requirement, we've got you covered there. Adobe Captivate Beyond the Essentials.

Adobe Captivate 9: The Essentials. Adobe Captivate The Essentials. For example, avoid using the keywords like: class, while, case, float. To see the list of reserved keywords in Captivate, see the article How to create user-defined variables in Adobe Captivate. An Advanced Action allows you to execute an action when an event is triggered, or when a condition or set of conditions are met.

You get the user interface shown below. As an example, implement a Standard action to welcome the users when they enter their name in the course you create. Delete the Submit button which opens up along with the text entry box and add a standard button.

This is done so because the button which comes along with the text entry box cannot be hidden from the slide during runtime. Rename the added standard button as Submit.

Edit the text caption as Enter your name in the box below and press enter to start the course. Select the text entry box, go to the Properties Inspector , Properties tab, Style section and click the [X] icon against Variable to open the Variable Name dialog box.

You are not just creating a variable but also associating the variable with the text entry box by doing this step. Add two text captions to the slide from the Text menu. Make both these captions invisible in the output by using the eye icon left to the caption name under the Properties tab of Properties Inspector. Click into the text caption to enable the Insert variable [X] button in the Properties Inspector , Properties tab, Character section under Style.

But best practice to call the variable is by clicking the [X] icon and opening the Insert Variable dialog box as this allows you to control the maximum length of the variable value to be displayed. Select the text entry box added in step 2, go to Properties Inspector , Properties tab, Actions section, and in the On Success drop-down list, select Execute Advanced Actions.

Click the folder icon against the Script drop-down list below On Success to open up the Advanced Actions dialog box. Conditional actions, as the name suggests, are executed only when a condition or set of conditions are met. Check the Conditional Tab in the Advanced Actions dialog box to set the condition and the corresponding action.

As an example, you can set up a conditional action to display a text caption to welcome a candidate if their age is greater than 15, and to display a deny-entry caption otherwise.

While logic is a conditional loop that evaluates a condition at the beginning of a statement, and continues to loop a set of actions until the condition or set of conditions is true or false. As an example, you can set a criterion for an eLearning course eligibility that while the candidate is a graduate and their experience is greater than or equal to 5 years, accept the candidate.

This project implements conditional actions to share some interesting information about the planets in our solar system. In the second slide, add a rectangle from the Shapes menu, a text caption from the Text menu, and a button from the Interactions menu. Repeat step 3 to add a planet each to the rest of the slides.

In the sample project given to you, the planets have been added in sequence according to their distance from the sun. Make sure to rename the elements added to the slide appropriately.

Create a condition that if the users enter a planet name, they are taken to the slide which contains that planet's information. And if they enter the spelling incorrectly or doesn't start the name in uppercase, an error message is displayed. To achieve this logic, an Advanced Action has to be set up for the text entry box added to the first slide. In the Hide drop-down, select the text caption which contains the error message. This removes the error message when the user enters the first slide for exploring more planets, after a sequence of bad and successful attempts.

In this example, when you click a button an object disappears, and reappears when you click the button again. Save the action and preview the project. You can see that when you click the button the object disappears, and appears again when you click the button again.

In this example, when you click a button, an Advanced Action containing a piece of JavaScript code executes producing the desired result. For more information, see Common JavaScript interface of Captivate. If you want to use an Advanced Action in other parts of the same project, or in a different project, you can save it as a Shared Action. For example, as an eLearning author, you have to repeatedly use an Advanced Action to welcome the candidates to the courses you create.

VitalSource manages the digital rights management for the PDF versions of our books. You'll get your advanced class started with a bit of a review. You'll record a software simulation using Captivate's Custom recording mode. Where's the twist? You'll edit a little-known language file and control the text that appears in future Captivate text captions. The time you'll save by pre-editing this little file just might pay for this class. If you've created several small projects, you'll learn that you can easily combine them into one master project.

Once you've combined projects, you'll learn how to create jumps branches between different parts of the bigger lesson. And if you've created large lessons that are too big to combine, you'll learn how to use the Aggregator to allow independent lessons to share a TOC.

Then you will learn to create question pools and random question slides that will make it difficult for learners to share quiz content with each other. Creating eLearning lessons and courses that are accessible to citizens with disabilities may be a requirement in your organization. During these lessons, you'll learn some Section best practices, and how to implement them within a Captivate project.

Variables allow you to customize an eLearning lesson for every student. And you don't have to know a single programming code to work with variables. You'll also learn about widgets and how to add them to a project. Interactions, also referred to as Smart Learning Interactions, are powerful widgets that allow you to quickly insert interactive objects onto a slide.

Followers: 0 people. Hi there, In Captivate 9, I have created a module where I want to use advanced actions to change the state of buttons. What am I missing? Thanks in advance for your help. Much appreciated. Thanks Leanne. Adobe Captivate. Advanced Actions. Lieve Weymeis. Please start a new thread. Thanks for your suggestions. Leanne Attachment. Thanks for replying Lieve.

Please let me know if you need any further information. First of all, please post the complete version number. There were 3 versions of 9. The following table summarizes the different scenarios and indicates whether the associated Advanced Actions can be copied:. While copying a slide or an object associated with an advanced action, ensure that you copy all objects or slides that are referenced within the Advanced Action.

For example, consider that an Advanced Action "MyAction" is associated with a button. The action contains a 'Show' action that displays an image 'Flower', and a 'Hide' action that hides an image 'Mango'. Now, if you need 'MyAction' in another project, copy the slide containing the button, and the slides containing the images 'Flower' and 'Mango'.

Then, paste them into the project. The variables are copied into the target project. If a variable configured in the Advanced Action does not exist in the target project, the variable is automatically created. If a variable exists with the same name, a new variable with the same name suffixed with a number is created. The Advanced Action is successfully copied only if the target slide is already copied into the target project. In Script , select the script that you want to run from the Action menu.

In the action menu, select Execute Advanced Actions. To learn more about Captivate and how you can create engaging learning content, download the following projects:.
